Buddhist Thais observe Vesek, 2600th Buddha's enlightenment
THAILAND, June 4 (TNA) - Buddhist Thais across the nation observed the Vesak Day on June 4, which coincides with a most auspicious occasion of the 2600th anniversary of the Lord Buddha's enlightment.
In the central Sumut Songkram province, for instance, the governor led people from all walks of life to give alms to 86 Buddhist monks this early morning; while a number of Buddhist Thais have also kept pouring into the provincial main and famous temple, Wat Petsamut Worawiharn, to worship the temple's over 600-year-old principle Buddha image, named Luang Pho Baan Laem, to bring them and their families good luck and fortunes.
Even in the troubled Thai deep South, Narathiwat Governor Aphinant Suethanuwong led local Buddhist Thais, mostly dressed in white, to offer alms to 30 Buddhist monks at Krom Luang Narathiwat Rajanagarindra Garden, to partly pay tribute to Thai soldiers who have died on duty in the insurgency-plagued southernmost Thai region.
Vesak Day has been generally recognized as a holiest day of the Buddhism, as it commemorates the Lord Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death marvelously, though falling in different years in the past. (TNA)
