POLICE RELENTLESS IN SEEKING OUT ABDUCTORS OF CHILDREN

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung Monday
gave the assurance that the police would be relentless in their efforts to
seek out and bring to justice the abductors of children.

He said the police efforts were hampered by an absence of witnesses and
lack of evidence, like in the abductions of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin and Sharlinie
Mohd
Nahar.

"Nevertheless, we will not neglect the cases. We will continue with our
investigations until there is success," he said when replying to Abdullah Sani
Abdul Hamid (PKR-Kuala Langat) during question time in the Lower House of
Parliament.

Eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin went missing on the night of Aug 20 last year
after she had gone to a wet market near her house in Wangsa Maju here. Her body
was found almost a month later stuffed in a gym bag left in front of a shoplot
in Petaling Jaya.

Sharlinie, five, was reported missing on Jan 9 this year after playing with
her elder sister at a playground about 200 metres from her house in Taman Medan,
Petaling Jaya, near here.

Chor said the police held regular discussions with their counterparts in
other countries, particularly Interpol, on cases involving the abduction of
children.

He said the measures taken by the police included the setting up of a
special team comprising trained police officers to focus on abduction cases.

"Besides, we conduct operations in places with a high incidence of crime.
When an abduction is reported, the police distribute leaflets to taxi drivers
and the public," he said.

He also said that the police conducted awareness programmes by giving talks
to parents on the monitoring of their children to prevent abductions.

Chor said that the police had so far resolved five of the 13 child
abduction cases this year. Last year, they resolved six of the 10 cases and in
2006, seven of the 11 cases.
