Thai authorities nab 110 illegal workers

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - Authorities of three Thai agencies concerned on Wednesday rounded up illegal workers at a condominium construction site on Rama IX Road in Bangkok. Immigration and special branch police, as well as officials of the Ministry of Labour's Department of Employment searched the construction site of the TC Green Condominium on Rama IX Road in Phang Muang area and nabbed 110 illegal workers, comprising 99 Cambodians and 11 Myanmar nationals, who will be repatriated. The Thai authorities also arrested their employer Sa-nga Moolmuang for hiring the illegal immigrants. Sompong Kaewwandee, head of the foreign labour control division of the Employment Department, said that only 800,000 foreign workers have registered with his ministry, but a survey has found as many as 1.1 million of them in Thailand, meaning that there are as many as 300,000 illegal workers in the country, causing the Thai government as much as 300 million baht annually to take care of the workers.
