S. Korean lawmaker to become IPU executive member
SEOUL, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean lawmaker will become an executive
committee member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) as the fourth legislator
of the country to take part in the global association, officials here said
Sunday.
The 119th Assembly of the IPU in Geneva, Switzerland, will formerly elect Chin
Young, a member of the ruling Grand National Party, as a new executive committee
member Wednesday. Member nations of the Asia-pacific region unanimously agreed
Sunday to elect Chin, officials said.
"For the next three years, Rep. Chin will draw international interest to various
domestic issues and expand Korea's role on the international diplomatic stage as
a key member of the IPU," an official of South Korea's parliament said.
Chin, 58, will take over the position from ex-South Korean lawmaker Yoo Jay-kun,
who lost his spot in the parliament in the April elections. Chin's term will end
in 2011.
Established in 1889, the IPU, an association of parliaments, is made up of 143
member states and seven associate members. The association discusses various
global issues including climate change, human rights and security.
