Chishti leaves for New Delhi on way to Pakistan
Ajmer (Rajasthan , India), May 14 (PTI) Pakistani microbiologist Khalil Chishti today left for New Delhi as he set out on his journey back home after spending almost two decades in India.
82-year-old Chisti is facing life sentence in a murder case and was on May 10 permitted by the Supreme Court to visit Pakistan for a temporary stay.
Chishti received his passport from a local court here today and thereafter boarded the Shatabdi Express train along with his brother Jamil Chishti and others.
"Chishti will go to Pakistan High commission in Delhi tomorrow and after completing remaining formalities, he will take a flight for Pakistan," Kavita Srivastava, a social activist accompanying him, said.
His son Tariq is in Delhi waiting for him, she added.
Chishti said that it was a happy moment for him.
As per the apex court's direction, Chishti will have to deposit his passport at the Indian High Commission in Pakistan and return to India by November 1.
Chishti came to Ajmer in 1992 to visit his ailing mother. However, he allegedly got himself involved in a brawl in which one of person was killed.
The apex Indian court finally granted him bail on April 9 and since then he was living with his brother's family in Ajmer. PTI
