JAKARTA CONDUCTS FIRST CAR FREE DAY AT RASUNA SAID

Jakarata, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - To bring a lower pollution environment to a success, the environmental control agency (BPLHD) along with the local government of Jakarta conducted its first car free day on Jl. Rasuna Said, Jakarta, Sunday.

The event is usually held at Jakarta's busiest and main road such as Thamrin-Sudirman thoroughfares especially on Sunday at the end of the month. The Police, Transportation department and BPLHD shut the road for personal vehicles, but not for public transportations, South Jakarta BPLHD head, Jhoni Tagor, here, Sunday.

People from all around Jakarta can safely jog, walk, do the cycling, or sports execises they like at the car free-related road. They usually bring along their families, friends and their beloved sweethearts to enjoy Jakarta's car free day.

Meanwhile in Rasuna Said, Kuningan sub-district where the free car day-related road is located is also closed for personal vehicles, and not to public transport like regular buses and TransJakarta buses who have their own lane.

The car free day at Rasuna Said which started from 6 am till 2 pm was officially opened by Jakarta's Governor Fauzi Bowo at 7 am.

"Unlike Sudirman-Thamrin thoroughfares which are closed on Sunday at the end of the month, the Rasuna Said's car free day would be a routine activity to be carried out once in every six months due a lack of air measuring device," Tagor said.

"Unfortunately we only have one device for the province, so we have to use it in turns for other locations," he stressed.
Joni admitted that socializing the car free day did not run effectively, because he still saw many car drivers and motorbike riders complained about the road block. Previously, BPLHD had informed people about car free day by distributing the leaflets and banner two weeks ago.

"Socializing the free car day event to the people is one of our obstacles and we have to improvise this in the future and therefore the contribution of mass media will be very helpful and long overdue," he said.
At the opening, BPHLD provided 10 pairs of futsal goal posts, two of them were provided for public uses and eight was used for a mini open futzal tournament held by BPLHD for local residents, students, employees and public with prizes of one million rupiah for the winner, Rp750 thousand for runner up and, Rp 500 thousand for the second runner up. At least 32 teams were competing in the tournament.

"We wish that the air quality in Jakarta will be improving with less pollution," said Sugiat, the BPLHD mini futsal tournament organizer.

He said that the tournament registration opened since last month and turned out to have attracted the youths in particular to participate in the tournament. "People's interest about the game was quite high, but we limited the teams due to a big number of participants. Players seem to be enjoying the game and never feel worried about losing in the competition."
