M'SIAN PM QUESTIONS WHY BN COMPONENTS ACT AS LOSER DESPITE ELECTION VICTORY
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi said in a cynical tone Saturday that he does not understand why National Front (Barisan Nasional -- BN) component parties act as though they have lost in the March general election despite winning the people's mandate.
"Sometimes I feel sad, sometimes more funny than sad because the parties
which have failed to form the government act as though they have won while we
who have won seem defeated.
"Sometimes we forget that we have won the election," he said when opening
the Gerakan National Delegates Conference at the party's headquarters in Menara
PGRM here.
Abdullah who is BN chairman, said whatever happened, it was important
to note that the BN's failure to retain two-third majority in the election
should serve as a reminder to all leaders of the components so that they could
improve on the situation for the sake of the people.
"If I can recall, many leaders of other countries have asked what is so
important about the two-third majority; nevertheless whatever people are saying,
it's important to note that the loss is a reminder that we need to improve
ourselves to avoid people hating us," he said.
He also reminded all component parties not to be arrogant with the power
untrusted upon them and not to forget people's wellbeing.
He said the BN manifesto for the 2004 election was not applicable only for
five years but the second phase of efforts towards achieving Vision 2020.
"The 2004 manifesto was well received. We have promised to bring changes
but we are not able to carry out everything. We are unable to make changes in a
short time.
"The reforms pertaining to the judiciary, Anti-Corruption Agency and
police, I will implement them to fulfil the promises made," he said.
He said that to effect the changes, everyone should do their jobs and
honour their responsibilities in all sincerity and with full determination for
the country's and the party's future.
"I would like to ask -- Are were ready mentally, physically? Are were
really honest to bring the change and adopt the change proposed? Or are the
words that came out of our mouths different from what we have in our hearts?
"This is our concern. We must be ready to appreciate it in all sincerity
and give total commitment to accept the changes," he said.
He said the country was also facing challenges to implement all the changes
on the back of the present political and economic conditions.
"We won't be able to face it if we ourselves are plagued by
religious-related issues," Abdullah said.
