VP CONGRATULATES AHTISAARI FOR WINNING NOBEL PRIZE

Padang, West Sumatra, Oct. 10 (ANTARA) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has congratulated Finnish former president Martti Ahtisaari for winning the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize.
"He deserves the Prize as he has devoted his life to peace efforts not only in Aceh but also in India, Kosovo, the Middle East and other places," said Kalla, concurrently chairman of the Golkar Party, here on Friday after meeting with the party's legislative nominees.
Kalla has not decided whether he will attend the Nobel Prize presentation ceremony.
"We'll see. Last week he also received an award from UNESCO and I was present at the ceremony," he said, adding Ahtisaari winning the Nobel Prize had been predicted by many people in the international community.
Kalla said Ahtisaari was a good friend and therefore he had made time to attend the UNESCO award ceremony in Paris to personally congratulate him.
Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono earlier also congratulated the former Finnish president for winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Presidential Spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said Yudhoyono would soon call Ahtisaari to convey his congratulatory message.
The head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Ole Danbolt Mjoes, cited Ahtisaari for "his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts."
Ahtisaari has had a long career in peace mediation work including a 2005 accord between Indonesia and rebels in the country's Aceh province.
"And I think many parties deserve credit for the (Aceh) peace process, including, of course, President Yudhoyono and several other prominent figures," Djalal said.
