ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE JOLTS MALUKU FRIDAY
Jakarta, Oct 10(ANTARA) - A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shocked Ambon, the capital of Maluku province on Friday at 13:10:37 local time, but there was no reports on casualties or material loss.
Information from the meteorology and geophysics agency (BMG) on Friday said the epicenter of quake was located in a depth of 70 kilometers in Southeast Ambon or 3.65 degrres southern latitude and 128.79 degrees eastern longitude.
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake on the richter scale also hit Maluku at 9:04 local time last Saturday, BMG said.
It said the epicenter of the quake was located at a depth of 72 kilometers in the sea about 97 kilometers northeast of Ambon, 370 kilometers northwest of Fakfak in West Papua, 371 kilometers southeast of Labuha in North Maluku, 380 kilometers southeast of Sanana in North Maluku, and 392 kilometers northwest of Sorong in West Papua.
BMG spokesman Benny Sipollo said in Ambon that there was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake some 97 kilometers northeast of the city but there were no immediate reports on human injuries or material loss caused by the quake which struck in the sea off Seram Island, South Maluku.
However, most of the people in Ambon hardly felt the shocks.
"There is no earthquake in Ambon. We don`t feel anything," said Yohanes Ratumali, of Benteng Atas in Gunung Nona hillside.
It was the second to hit the East Indonesian islands on Saturday this week after a powerful 7.6 magnitude quake struck off Halmahera island in North Maluku province on Thursday.
BMG said the epicenter of Thursday`s quake in North Maluku was located 122 km northwest of Ternate in a depth of 10 km below sea level.
Soon after the earthquake, BMG issued a tsunami warning but it was lifted after receiving reports from several areas that there was no indications of a tsunami.
"Judging from its intensity, the quake has a potential to trigger a tsunami but there have been no reports on any tidal waves," North Maluku BMG spokesman Salimin said, adding that the temblor prompted the people in Ternate to rush out of their homes in panic.
It was reported that the shocks were also felt by the people of Gorontalo, and Manado, capital of North Sulawesi.
