16 killed in suicide blast in Pak tribal belt

Rezaul H Laskar
Islamabad, Oct 10 (PTI) At least 16 people were killed and 40 others injured Friday when a suicide bomber struck at a meeting of tribal elders discussing ways to counter Taliban activities in Pakistan's troubled northwest, the latest in a series of terror attacks that have rocked the country.

The blast took place in Orakzai tribal agency bordering
Afghanistan when a tribal 'jirga' or council of elders was in
session, T.V. channels reported.

A large number of people were in attendance at the
anti-Taliban meeting when the suicide bomber blew himself up
killing 16 people and injuring 40, the channels said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack but
security officials suspected Taliban's hand in the blast.

The tribals have formed 'lashkars' or militias to fight
the Taliban in the region amid a string of suicide attacks
which have claimed hundreds of lives in the recent months.

Members of various tribes were attending the 'jirga' to
discuss ways to counter the Taliban activities in the restive
region.

In the absence of well-equipped hospitals, authorities
were facing difficulties in providing treatment to the
injured, the channels reported.

The blast came a day after militants targeted a high-
security police complex here and attacked a jail van in North
West Frontier Province (N.W.F.P.) killing 16 people and
injuring ten.

A suicide bomber struck the Anti-Terrorism Squad office
in the Pakistan capital Thursday injuring 10 people, the
second terror attack in Islamabad within a month. Nearly 60
people were killed in the September 20 suicide bombing on the
five-star Marriott hotel here.

In the Dir Bala area of N.W.F.P., 16 people, including
four children, were killed and several others injured Thursday
when a roadside bomb went off while a prison van and a school
bus were passing by.

Rattled by a wave of suicide attacks across the country,
Pakistani lawmakers got a rare briefing by the top military
and intelligence brass during a special joint session of
Parliament on the security situation, including the threat
posed by the al-Qaeda and Taliban, as authorities vowed to
take the militancy head on. PTI KIM
