S SUMATRA EARNS US$1.798 BLN FROM EXPORTS IN FIRST SEMESTER 2008

Palembang, Indonesia, Oct 10 (ANTARA) - In the first semester of 2008 South Sumatra earned US$1.798 billion in foreign exchange from the export of 25 non-oil/non-gas commodities, a provincial trade official said.

The biggest contributors to South Sumatra's foreign exchange earnings in the period were rubber (US$936,000 and oil-palm products, including crude palm oil (CPO) (US$362,763), Eppy Mirza, head of the province's trade office, said here Friday.

The third biggest contributors were pulp (US$ 132.703 million) and coal (US$128.356 million).

Among the countries that had imported South Sumatra's commodities, China was the biggest as exports to that couuntry reached a total value of US$ 349.195 million, followed by the USA with US$311.769 million and Malaysia with US$ 155.062 million, Mirza said.
