GOVT CONSULTS HOUSE OVER REGULATION ON FINANCIAL CRISIS
Jakarta, Oct 10 (ANTARA) - The government on Friday consulted with the House of Representatives (DPR) the need to draw up a government regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) on financial crisis, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said.
"I have just had a consultation meeting with the DPR about the matter and it is possible for the government and Bank Indonesia to take preventive measures should we have perceived a worsening situation," the minister said at the Parliament building here on Friday.
When asked about what Perpu the government needed to be given a priority, whether the one on increase in the amount of guarantee fund for banks' customers or on the financial sector's safety net, the minister said in a condition like now it was difficult to say which had to be given a priority.
"The important thing is that we should provide what we urgently need," she said.
On the amount of increase in the guarantee fund provided by the Savings Guarantor Institutions (LPS), the minister said what was urgent was that Bank Indonesia (BI/the central bank) and the government should act first.
"On the amount, we will decide it later," she said.
The Savings Guarantor Institution had so far provided guarantee funds for customers' savings at a maximum of Rp100 million for each bank customer.
BI said on Thursday that the amount of bank customers' guarantee funds should be increased in order to provide certainty for bank customers amid the global financial crisis.
"We are now also considering it because several countries have raised their guarantee funds such as Brattain from 35,000 pounds sterling to 50,000 pounds sterling for individual customers and up to 100,000 pounds sterling for companies," BI Senior Deputy Governor Miranda Gultom said.
She said in the current global financial crisis almost all countries had adopted various polices to temporarily ease liquidity restrictions in order to restore the public's confidence
