WRC INDONESIA POSTPONED UNTIL 2011

Jakarta, Oct 10 (ANTARA) - World Rally Championship (WRC) scheduled to be held in Indonesia in 2010 is postponed until 2011 due to technical and non technical reasons.

"WRC Indonesia is not canceled but postponed for some reasons," a promotor of the championship, Jeffrey JP said in a telephone from
Malaysia, Friday.

The Federation Internationale d'Automobile (FIA), he said, has given two options for Indonesia.

"First, Indonesia to host (WRC) in 2010 and a candidate in 2009. If it fails as a candidate, Indonesia will permanently withdrawn from WRC host. But if the plan to host WRC is postponed until 2011 and it become a candidate in 2010, we still have time to make it up. FIA suggest us to take the second option because they don't want us to fail," the Director of PT Bloedus Management Indonesia (BMI) as promotor of national as well as international rally said.

In technical matter, FIA has asked Indonesia to improve its infrastructure such as race track to meet WRC standard, where racers could increase its speed to 80-85 km per hour.

During the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) in Makassar on August 24, the average speed was only 70-75 km per hour.

"In addition, billowing dust should be reduced, because WRC required racers release duration between one to two minutes. In previous rally, the duration was three minutes. This means we have to harden the track," he said.

Meanwhile, the non technical factor that has been put into consideration was the general election in 2009 as well as other domestic issues including farmers' protest in Takalar recently.

"Thank God that we can postpone the championship so that we can have better preparation," he added.

Indonesia hosted WRC in 1996 and 1997, both were held in North Sumatra. Carlos Sainz, a Spanish racer won the race.

WRC in 2011 is planned to be held in a plantation area in South Sulawesi.
