DON'S SAY RI ENDURES ECONOMIC CRISIS, PRESIDENT WARNS
Tangerang, Indonesia, Oct 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the present turmoils in the capital and financial markets cannot yet be considered as an economic crisis. Therefore, he said, people should not too hastily say Indonesia was now undergoing an economic crisis.
The president made the statement in his address to dedicate Bani Umar grand mosque in Tangerang district on Friday.
Before concluding his address the president referred to Indonesia's present economic conditions.
"Before I conclude my address, I would like to say that the world today is facing a financial and capital market crisis but it cannot yet be said that our country is in an economic crisis," Yudhoyono said.
Reiterating the 10 steps he had prescribed on Monday (October 6) to avoid the negative impact of the global financial crisis, the president called on market players to remain calm and rational while trying to find a way out from the problems Indonesia was facing as a consequence of the global crisis.
Yudhoyono also said the global capital market situation did have an impact but it did not reflect Indonesia's overall economic condition.
Therefore he called on all parties to stay calm and to keep thinking positively while the government, Bank Indonesia (the central bank), and the business community should make sure that the global financial crisis would have a minimum impact on Indonesia's economy.
"We have sufficient funds from state institutions for creating job opportunities and speeding up infrastructure development across the country," Yudhoyono said.
He explained that a total of Rp290 trillion had been allocated to protect the people's economy in 2008, and Rp173 trillion had been disbursed during the January-October 2008 period.
"Some Rp25.9 billion was disbursed in October, and the rest will continue to be channeled into sustainable development," the president said.
The head of state added that the real sector in any country would certainly be affected by the global financial crisis but the government and the business community should keep trying to move the real sector in Indonesia.
