Electricity generation at Turkish NPP to begin in 2019

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 26 /Trend, A.Taghiyeva / Electricity generation in Turkey's first nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu site will begin in 2019, the Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday quotes Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz as telling reporters. According to Yildiz, last year Russia invested $700 million in the project to build Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. This year, the Russian investments in this project will amount to $2.4 billion, he said. Yildiz also stressed that Turkey is in talks with three countries for the construction of the second and third nuclear power plants. However, the minister did not disclose the countries, with which negotiations are underway. Earlier, the Turkish state-owned company EUAS and Canadian Candu signed an agreement on cooperation in nuclear energy. Also, Turkey and China sign an agreement on peaceful use of nuclear energy earlier. A similar agreement was signed with South Korea and Russia as well. In late 2010, Russia ratified an intergovernmental agreement with Turkey on cooperation in construction and operation of Turkey's first nuclear power plant at the Akkuyu site.
