Al-Nasser: Qatar Enjoys Great Respect in the International Community
Doha, April 24 (QNA) - HE President of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser underlined that the State of Qatar, under the wise leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, enjoys great respect and recognition in the international community because of its contributions in all areas and dealing with wisdom and balance.
In an interview with the Qatari daily (al-Sharq), HE al-Nasser said that the initiatives launched by Qatar enjoy the world admiration and appreciation, noting the country's leading role in resolving conflicts peacefully and contribute effectively in addressing the challenges of the global development.
HE al-Nasser expressed hope that the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), currently in session in Doha, would come up with a final communique that contributes to strengthening the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, due to be held in Rio de Janeiro on June 20 with more than 90 heads of state taking part.
Meanwhile, HE al-Nasser underlined that Qatar's presidency of the UN General Assembly have contributed to activating the role of the international organization, especially in supporting the Arab issues and the countries of the Arab spring, pointing out that the Security Council resolution on Syria was the result of action by the General Assembly.
HE President of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser stressed the necessity to change the United Nations system to suit its representation of 7 billion people in 193 countries, noting that he is seeking to adopt a mechanism in the General Assembly to resolve disputes by peaceful means.
He also stressed the need to develop future plans and visions that make the economy the responsibility of the entire international community not to remain confined to the G20, pointing out that he had called to hold high-level conference to discuss the global economy on May 17.
HE al-Nasser lauded the "HopeFor" initiative for improving the effectiveness and coordination of military and civil defence assets for natural disaster response, which was presented by an idea of HE Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, noting that a draft resolution was adopted in the UN to turn the idea of "HopeFor" into reality.
He underlined that the UN Climate Summit 2012 which is to be hosted by Qatar in November and December are the most important in the history of the world because it coincides with the end of the Kyoto Protocol, stressing on the necessity to agree on an alternative agreement or the extension of the convention itself.
