Al-Nasser: 'Hosting UNCTAD Conference in Doha Reflects International Community's Confidence'
Doha, April 18 (QNA) - HE President of the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al-Nasser stressed that hosting the 13th session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Doha next week reflects the International Community's confidence in the State of Qatar and its leading role, especially that this conference will be held for the first time in the Arab region.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), HE Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, who is participating in the UNCTAD conference, said that this conference, which will be held at Qatar's National Convention Centre from April 21 to 26, provides an opportunity for developing countries to discuss various issues related to the sustainable development.
He stressed the commitment of the General Assembly to the distinctive role of the UNCTAD conference since its establishment in 1964, saying it was representing the new geographical map which reflected a new political reality helped in building a wide international consensus on the necessary changes towards the international policies and institutional structures.
Under the theme 'Development-Centered Globalisation: Toward Sustainable and Inclusive Growth and Development', many economic and development issues will top the agenda of the 13th session of the UNCTAD, he added.
Al-Nasser expressed his belief that the General Assembly can play a unique role in overcoming the political obstacles that have hampered the international community from working effectively and collaboratively to meet the challenges of economic and development goals.
He also noted to the 66th session of the Assembly, saying that it had seen many prominent discussions, including the preparation for UN's Rio+20 Sustainable Development Conference to be held in Brazil in June.
HE President of the United Nations General Assembly said that he will organize a high-level meeting on May 17 and 18 with the participation of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the state of the global economy. (QNA)
