Peoples' Alliance plans Monday rally at National Stadium; Will march on police headquarters

BANGKOK, Oct 10 (TNA) - Thailand's so-called democracy activist coaltion, the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), has announced plans to rally on Monday morning October 13 at Supachalasai, the National Stadium, before moving to the nearby National Police Bureau Headquarters to protest against police violence against PAD protesters last Tuesday that left two people dead and over 400 injured.

Police used teargas to disperse the protesters on Tuesday to open a
passage for members of the House and Senate to enter and leave Parliament
as the government delivered its policy statement.

PAD protesters encamped in the Government House compound since late August
expanded their rally to the gates of Parliament in an attempt to stop the
legislative body from convening and to protest against planned
constitutional amendments.

PAD core leader Sondhi Limthongkul told the protesters inside Government
House that PAD supporters will gather on Monday at 9am at Supachalasai
Stadium and would march to protest at the National Police Bureau
Headquarters.

The demonstration, he said, was to protest to the police against their
violent action against the people.

He added that the seven core leaders of PAD including himself would
surrender to police on Friday if the police guaranteed that they would be
allowed immediate bail.

The seven key leaders planned to surrender to police at Nang Lerng police
station at 10 am.

The PAD leadership included Mr. Sonthi, Somsak Kosaisuk, Phiphop
Thongchai, Somkiat Phongphaibul, Suriyasai Katasila, Amorn Amornratananond
and Therdphum Jaidee.

Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang and Chaiwat Sinsuwong, also in the leaders
group, were arrested last week but were released by Criminal Court on
Thursday after a lawyer used a senatorial position as surety for bail in
lieu of Bt100,000 each.

Both men rejoined the PAD rally at Government House and were on stage
speaking to their supporters Thursday night.

The Appeals Court earlier Thursday dropped treason charges against the PAD
core leaders, but other charges were still intact.

The Central Administrative Court issued an injunction ordering police to
only adopt necessary measures and strictly follow international standard
practices when dispersing protesters.

Mr. Sonthi said that PAD lawyers were preparing to file various lawsuits
against police but initially would target Pol. Maj-Gen. Surapol
Thuanthong, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police, and deputy national
police chief Umnuay Nimmano for their press conference related to the
measures including their claims that Angkhana Raduppanyawut, who died
during the crackdown, was carrying a bomb with her during the
demonstration.

The democracy coalition plans to distribute millions copies of a book and
VCD about the police crackdown against the PAD supports, to be given away
at no cost for all Thais in the country and worldwide, Mr. Sonthi
said.(
