World Bank selects Azerbaijan’s city waste plant contractor

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 12 /Trend A.Hasanov/
National Water operator JSC Azersu and the World Bank (WB) have selected a contractor to build an installation for the treatment of wastewater and other related facilities in the city of Shamakhy, Azersu said on Thursday.
The winners of the tender were named as BIOWORKS Verfahrenstechnik GmbH (Germany) and Ltd., and. TTŞ. İnşaat (Azerbaijan) and the contract has already been signed.
The project provides for theconstruction and installation of a wastewater treatment plant to ATV-131standards.
Plant capacity will be 9.5 thousand cubic meters of water per day. It will serve 50.000 people. Construction work should be completed within 18 months. This project is financed by the government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank.
The World Bank allocated the first credit amounting to $230 million in 2007 to improve water and sanitation in the regions of the country and another $80 million was allocated by the government of Azerbaijan. The project covers the full restoration of water supply and sanitation in Shamakhy, Qabala, Saatli and Sabirabad areas.
Azerbaijan has been a member of the World Bank since 1992. During that period of cooperation, the World Bank allocated $3 billion to implement 44 projects in Azerbaijan. The current portfolio on 20 projects in Azerbaijan amounts to $2.3 billion.
