RI TO PLANT 100 MILLION TREES IN ONE MONTH'S TIME

Jakarta, Oct 9 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will plant about 100 million trees within about a month's time starting November 28, 2008 as part of its activities to mark 100 years of National Awakening, a cabinet minister said.

"President Yudhoyono will declare November 28 as Indonesia's Planting Day. As part of the activities to mark 100 years of National Awakening , about 100 million trees will be planted across the country," Forestry MInister MS kaban told ANTARA here Thursday.

Kaban further said the program to plant 100 million trees would be carried out across Indonesia from November 28 to December 28.

"Indonesia's Planting Day will be declared at the launching of a drive to plant 100,000 trees on 250 hectares of land in Banten province," Kaban added.

All of Indonesia's provinces would plant trees on at least 100,000 hectares of land each, said Kaban.

Of the total of 100 million trees, about 60 percent would be hard wood trees and the rest multipurpose tree species (MPTS). Some Rp280 billion in funds would be spent to procure 100 million tree seedlings.

In 2007, Indonesia was among 10 countries that received awards from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for their tree-planting campaigns.
