RI OFFICIAL SAYS SECURITY IN MALACCA STRAIT IS LITTORAL COUNTRIES' RESPONSIBILITY

Busan, Oct 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesia reiterated here on Thursday that security of the Malacca Strait was the responsibility of littoral countries Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Indonesia's Deputy Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Moekhlas Sidik in a statement at a Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WNPS) said the three littoral countries continued working together to maintain security and safety of shipping in the world's busiest strait, among others through coordinated "Malsindo" patrols.

"So, the presence of other countries in the effort is not necessary," he said.

Maritime security was a central issue developing in the WNPS which was one of the 2008 International Fleet Review activities.

The WNPS is a forum of naval leaders in the West Pacific region which is strategic for discussing current issues in the region.

In the four yearly event Indonesia asked the forum to reconsider the wish of Britain and Pakistan to join the WNPS as they are not located in the region.
