NIGERIANS TO CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY FRIDAY
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Hundreds of Nigerians in Malaysia will gather here Friday night to celebrate the 48th anniversary of their country's independence.
Nigerian High Commissioner to Malaysia Peter J.E.Anegbeh will host the
celebration at his residence, Nigeria House.
The event is expected to be attended by diplomats, students, academicians
and the business community from Nigeria as well as Malaysia.
"It is a very meaningful celebration as it will bring closer
people-to-people relations between the two countries," Anegbeh told Bernama
Thursday.
He said there was a need to create more awareness and understanding of
Nigeria among Malaysians to realise the full potential that could be harnessed
between the two countries which shared many similarities.
Kuala Lumpur and Abuja established diplomatic ties in 1965, about five
years after the West African nation gained independence from Britain on Oct 1,
1960.
There are an estimated 5,000 Nigerian students in Malaysia.
