S. Korean contingent in Lebanon treat 7,000 patients since deployment
SEOUL, Oct. 9 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean contingent in Lebanon's Tyre area this week served its 7,000th patient, a total reached in just 15 months by the unit's medical staff of three doctors and two nurses, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Thursday.
The Dongmyeong Unit began providing free medical services to local residents
immediately after it was deployed there in July last year, the JCS said.
"It is a great achievement that was made possible only by the unit's medical
staff who made daily trips to five villages in their area of responsibility to
provide services," it said in a press release.
Meanwhile, the unit's veterinarian, one of only two veterinarians for the entire
United Nations forces in Lebanon, has also provided services to 1,000 livestock
as of Tuesday, it said.
The 359-member South Korean unit is part of a 28-nation U.N. peacekeeping force
in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL. Seoul in July approved a one-year extension of the
troop dispatch.
