Swimmer Park aims for sweep at national competition
SEOUL, Oct. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean swimming star Park Tae-hwan eyes a sweep of freestyle titles at an upcoming national athletic competition, his coach said Thursday.
"He's in good form. We don't want to put too much pressure on him, but honestly
speaking, we're hoping for a new record," Roh Min-sang said.
Park, 19, won the gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle and the silver in the
200m freestyle at the Beijing Olympics in August. Hugely popular in his country,
the gold was the first in Olympic swimming for South Korea.
Park holds South Korean records for five of the six freestyle events that will be
featured at the National Sports Festival, the country's oldest and largest
sporting event that begins Friday with over 18,000 athletes.
"Endurance isn't much of a factor with the 50m competition," Roh said, referring
to the only distance where Park does not hold a front-running record. "So, we've
trained with our best efforts to focus on raising speed."
