Seminar promotes cornea donation

Hanoi (VNA) - The Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee and the American non-governmental organisation ORBIS co-hosted a seminar in Hanoi on Oct. 8 to share experience in promoting cornea donation.

Nguyen Thi Hoa, a senior citizen in Kim Son district in the northern
province of Ninh Binh, was the first person to donate her corneas in May
2007. Since then the Eye Bank has received generous support from volunteers
and donors, which has helped lead to a marked reduction in the number of
people waiting for donated corneas to get rid of blindness.

The project "Raising Awareness about Cornea Donation in Vietnam" has been
carried out by the Vietnam Red Cross and ORBIS Vietnam in the central
provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien Hue, and Da Nang as well as Ho Chi
Minh City since November 2007.

As part of the project, almost 1,500 staff from the Vietnam Red Cross
have been trained and participated in an information campaign regarding
blindness and mobilising people to donate their corneas after their deaths.

As of the end of September the Eye Bank had received 64 corneas from 32
donors from northern cities and provinces.

The bank expects to receive 330 corneas per year.

Since 2004, ORBIS has established itself as the largest cornea provider in
Vietnam , supplying approximately 100 corneas each year.-Enditem
