Thai military to help police patrol Bangkok
Hanoi (VNA) - Thailand 's military put troops on the streets of Bangkok to keep order after a day of battles between police and
anti-government protesters.
Over 1,000 unarmed soldiers from the Thai Army, Navy and Air Force have
been deployed in the evening of October 7 to back up the police, according
to news agencies.
Army commander Anupong Paochinda was quoted as saying that police asked for
help. He denied rumours of a coup, two years after the military ousted
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless putsch.
Police fired tear gas a few times since early morning of October 7 into the
crowds of protesters led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in
an attempt to disperse them, while the other side returned attacks at the
police with home-made weapons.
Two people died and nearly 400 others were injured in clashes between
police and anti-government protesters.-Enditem
