12 FOREIGN TEAMS TO VIE FOR INCREASED PRIZE MONEY AT COBRA 10s

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The 39th HSBC-COBRA 10s
International Rugby championship that offers an increase in prize money this year, has attracted 12 foreign and three local teams for the tournament to be held at a stadium here on Nov 1-2.

COBRA president Krishnan Tan said defending champion Canterbury Rugby
Union from New Zealand were among the first to confirm their participation for the tournament.

"The championship will see a significant increase in prize money compared with last year. Last year the champion received US$15,000 but this year the champion takes home USD$25,000.

"The runner-ups purse will also be increased from US$10,000 to US$15,000,"
he told reporters after receiving a sponsorship pledge of RM200,000
(US$57,142)from HSBC Bank Berhad at the COBRA Club here Wednesday.

Meanwhile, COBRA, last year's losing finalist had roped in a number of
foreign players to beef up the squad this year.

COBRA coach Boon Hoon Chee said the overall strength of the team this year
would be better than that of last year due to the presence of nine international
players from Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa.

"The nine foreign players will combine forces with five local players, who
will be selected from nine shortlisted players, to mount a serious challenge for
the title this year," said Boon who would hand over his duties to Duncan
Robertson of New Zealand, for the duration of the tournament.

The nine foreign players in the COBRA team are Eben Joubert, Faan Bassin
(South Africa), Paul Grant, Doug Tjientjens (New Zealand), Isoa Turvva, Kini
Rosolosolo, Jove Dalituicavne, Vonaini Korolano and Velano Toroingrces
(Fiji).

Apart from COBRA, Sandakan Eagles and NS Wanderers would represent Malaysia
in the tournament.
