POWER PLANT CONTRACTORS ENCOURAGED TO USE DOMESTIC PRODUCTS

Jakarta, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - The energy and mineral resources ministry is encouraging project contractors, especially those building power plants, to use domestic products in an effort to reduce the impact of the global financial crisis, a spokesman said.
However, the extent to which local products could be used also depended on whether the needed components were already being produced in Indonesia, J Purwono, the ministry's director general for power and energy use, said here Wednesday.
The use of domestic products would therefore be adjusted to the domestic industry's capability to make the needed components, he said.
According to Purwono, many power plant projects with a capacity of up to 25 MW accross the country were already using domestically produced generators and turbines. But domestic industry was still unable to make generators and turbines for power plants with a capacity of 600 MW.
Purwono said locally made components made up about 60 percent of the components that went into small power plants in the country while 100 percent of the civil engineering parts of power plants in the country already consisted of locally made components.
