BRR URGED TO BUILD 1,200 MORE HOUSES FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

Aceh Jaya, Indonesia, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - Tsunami victims in Aceh Jaya district, Nanggroe Aceh Darrussalam (NAD) province, urged the Aceh-Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Board (BRR) to immediately build 1,200 more houses for them because BRR's mission will come to an end in April next year.
"During the four years since the tsunami, victims in Aceh Jaya have had nowhere to stay in and therefore they are waiting for BRR to build houses for them," Aceh Jaya deputy district head Zamzami A Rani said here on Wednesday.
He said Aceh Jaya district's administration had made all possible effort to approach BRR, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and donor countries to urge them to build 1,200 additional houses for the victims.
Because of the tsunami on December 26, 2004, its victims in Aceh Jaya needed more than 14,000 houses but 1,200 of them had yet to be built and no single party had a commitment to building them.
Meanwhile, BRR chief Kuntoro Mankusubroto had said he would try to find an NGO or donor country that was prepared to build the 1,200 houses still needed by tsunami victims in Aceh Jaya.
"Time is fleeting and the task of BRR will soon come to an end in April 2009, but its efforts have yet to yield fruit. To date there is no information from BRR whether the shortage of 1,200 houses will be covered," Kuntoro said.
He said the NGOs and BRR were possibly reluctant to build the still needed houses because they would have to be built not in one area but scattered in several sub districts.
He said as many as 1,200 houses should have been built in six sub districts.
Since the construction of the 1,200 houses remains uncertain, Aceh Jaya district administration officials had asked for Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf's assistance to find the best possible solution to the problem.
