Jakarta, Oct. 8 (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto on behalf of the government officially handed a presidential decree extending the tenure of Yogyakarta's governor and vice governor by a maximum of three years to the Sultan of Yogyakarta here Wednesday.
"I officially handed the presidenital decree (to the sultan) on behalf of the President," Mardiyanto said after the act at the Home Affairs Ministry.
The decree, bearing the numbers 86/P/2008 and dated October 7, 2008, said the terms of office of Yogyakarta's governor and vice governor could be extended by a maximum of three years as of October 9, 2008.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said he accepted the extension and would convey the aspirations of Yogyakarta's people to the government through Yogyakarta's legislative body.
Speaking on the Bill on the special status of Yogyakarta province, the sultan said he hoped the bill could be passed into law before the end of his new three-year term as Yogyakarta governor.
During the deliberations on the bill, there should be intensive communications between the government and the people of Yogyakarta, he said.
"The bill is most important not for the Sultan, but for the people of Yogyakarta as part of Indonesia, and it should not be out of this context," he said.
