HOUSE HOPES BI ABLE TO MAINTAIN MONETARY STABILITY

Jakarta, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) expressed hope here on Wednesday that the central bank would be able to maintain the country's monetary stability amidst current global crisis.
"We also appeal to the government to take strategic measures to prevent the crisis from affecting the people further," DPR Speaker Agung Laksono said.
He said he hoped the strategic measures the government and the Bank Indonesia would take would be able to secure the country's economic fundamentals.
On the decision to suspend share trading at the Jakarta Stock Exchange on Wendesday morning, he said he believed it was taken based on profound considerations.
"I think the business community had already anticipated it," he said.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange suspended trading after the share price index fell by 10.38 eprcent.
Its president director, Erry Firmansyah, said the JSE decided to suspend trading at 11.06 am after the index dropped 168.052 points to 1,451.669 while the LQ45 index was corrected by 38.261 points or 11.86 percent to 284.236.
The decline in the JSE index was part of a global trend following the financial crisis in the US. Even the US Fed failed to assure investors making the Dow index slump 5.11 percennt or 508.38 points to 9,447.11.
The drop in the US stock exchange affected regional stock exchanges including the Jakarta Stock Exchange that suffered a deep correction causing the bourse authority to suspend trading temporarily.
