PARTIES SHOULD NO LONGER BURDEN GOVERNMENT : HOUSE DEPUTY SPEAKER
Kediri, E Java, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - Political parties in Indonesia should no longer become a burden to the government which is struggling to deal with the impact of the global economic crisis, House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar said here on Wednesday.
"Political parties should support the government, instead of becoming a government burden," Muhaimin said, adding that he fully supported President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who prescribed 10 steps on Monday to avoid the negative impact of the United States-triggered global financial crisis on Indonesia's economy.
In step nine the president said the year 2009 was a political and general elections year. This fact as well the current crisis should be good reason for all parties to avoid partisan politics and put the people's interest above group or individual interests.
"We fully support step nine, and hope that the political parties' leaderships will no longer intervene in government policies," said Muhaimin Iskandar who is concurrently chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB).
He also asked both regional and central governments to observe maximum efficiency in the use of state and regional budget funds, especially in projects that had little to do with the people's interest.
"For example, construction of new buildings which have nothing to do with the people's interest had better be stopped," Muhaimin said after installing the executive board of PKB's Kediri branch. .
