IAIN AR-RANIRI TO BECOME FIRST STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, Oct 7 (ANTARA) - Ar-Raniri Darussalam State Islamic Institute (IAIN) in Banda Aceh will soon be turned into the first State Islamic University (UIN) in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province, its rector, Yusny Saby, said here on Tuesday.

"We are making various preparations to turn the status of IAIN into UIN, because it is the desire of every academician at every college," Yusny Saby said.

In relation with the change of its status, the only state Islamic institute in Aceh is currently preparing the accreditation to its 30 study programs.

Yusny Saby said a number of academic requirements such as the number of teaching staff with doctoral degrees and the number of the programs of study were needed to turn IAIN Ar-Raniri into a state Islamic university.

He said the institute at present had five faculties and 30 study programs.

According to Yusny Saby, there was no problem in turning the IAIN Ar-Raniri into a state Islamic university because it had 45 professors and 18 lecturers with doctoral degrees.

Meanwhile, a professor at the Jakarta Syarief Hidayatullah State Islmaic Universty, Suwito, said the status of IAIN Ar-Raniry should be changed into a university immediately because it was important for the improvement of education quality in Indonesia in the future.

"I hope the idea to turn the institute into a university will soon be realized," Suwito said when contacted by phone on Tuesday.

The change in status of IAIN Syarief Hidaytullah in Jakarta to be a State Islamic University was the first in Indonesia and then was followed by the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) in Yogyakarta, UIN in Malang, UIN in Makassar, and UIN in Pekanbaru.

Yusny Saby said turning IAIN Ar-Raniri in Aceh into UIN Ar-Raniri was in line with the imposition of syariah law in Aceh and with the improvement of education quality with Islamic nuances in the province.
