Ministry: Weak multi-storey building likely to be demolished in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku, March 9 / Trend I. Isabalayeva /
A dangerous multi-storey building in the Surakhani district of Baku located on the Zikh Highway, 21b is likely to be demolished. The residents were evacuated yesterday because of the subsidence, chief engineer of the complex team on hydrogeology and engineering geology under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Shaig Niftiyev told Trend today.
"The foundation of this building is completely destroyed," Niftiyev said. "A process of shrinkage is developing. It is impossible to prevent it and at present, a report is being prepared. It will be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers and a decision will be made to demolish the building."
He said that there is uneven soil shrinkage around the house. As a result, cracks have appeared.
Niftiyev stressed that according to the preliminary assessment, the cause of the incident is the increased groundwater level.
He said that the process of ground shrinkage was fixed on February 27. The soil and buildings have been monitored since then.
He added that heavy rain continuing for several days did not affect the activation of landslide and shrinkage processes in other parts of Baku.
Previously, there was a landslide in Baku between General Shikhlinski Street and Ganja prospect. The inhabitants were evacuated, but later allowed to return home.
