PRESIDENT APPOINTS SOFYAN DJALIL AS INTERIM FINANCE MINISTER

Jakarta, Oct 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Tuesday appointed State Minister for State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil interim finance minister during Finance Minister Sri Mulyani attendance at the International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s annual meeting in Washington DC.

Speaking after being summoned to meet with Yudhoyono at the presidential office, Djalil said he would perform the finance minister's duties for 10 days starting Tuesday, October 7, 2008.

Asked what was discussed in his meeting with the president, Djalil said, "The president gave general directives about the state budget, taxes, and customs. Nothing specific."
He said the president had deemed it necessary to appoint an interim finance minister while Sri Mulyani was abroad because under the present global financial conditions, the country's finances needed to be handled with extra care.

"During my stint as interim finance minister, no special measure will be taken. Hopefully, the situation remains good and there will be no extraordinary happening," Djalil said.

Commenting on the continuing volatility of the rupiah's exchange rate during the past few days, Djalil said the matter would be discussed with Bank Indonesia (central bank) Governor Boediono later on Tuesday.

"Concerning the rupiah exchange rate, we are going to have a meeting with the central bank governor to take necessary measures. There is no special directive from the president because he will meet again with the central bank governor and I in the afternoon," Sofyan Djalil said.

He said it was necessary to maintain the people's trust in the government because the US-triggered global crisis would have an impact unlike the monetary crisis in 1998.

"Maintaining economic stability is the responsibility of all parties, and hopefully the crisis in the United States will be over soon. The important thing at present is how to make the people optimistic that all problems can be solved well," Djalil said after he and Tax Director General Darmini Nasution, Customs and Excise Director General Anwar Supriyadi, and Budget Director General Anny Ratwawati were summoned by President Yudhoyono.
