Lankan Air Force pounds LTTE base, 25 LTTE militants killed

Colombo, Oct 6 (PTI) Sri Lankan Air force jets Monday pounded two Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.) artillery launching pads in the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi, as 25 Tamil Tigers, three soldiers and two civilians died during fierce clashes between the army and the rebels in the island nation's embattled north.

The fighter jets launched the air raids at the
L.T.T.E. artillery launching pads located 14 km North of
Nachchikudda in Kilinochchi at 11.15 a.m. Monday, officials
said.

Air Force spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka
Nanayakkara claimed that the air sorties were successful.

In ground clashes, one soldier was killed in east of
Akkarayankulam in Kilinochchi Sunday, the defence ministry
said Monday.

In a similar incident that occurred in the same area
Sunday, another soldier was killed and two others suffered
injuries, it said.

Later, in the evening troops attacked two L.T.T.E.
bunkers located in the west of Akkarayankulam area in separate
incidents and killed seven L.T.T.E. cadres in the two
confrontations, the ministry said.

During a separate search in the east of
Akkarayankulam, troops found a decomposed body of an L.T.T.E.
cadre along with a T-56 riffle.

Meanwhile, 57 Division troops operating in the eastern
flank of the Kilinochchi front attack an L.T.T.E. bunker
located in the Vannivilankulam area Sunday, the military said.

Intercepted L.T.T.E. radio transmissions revealed that
7 Tiger rebels were killed and 9 others were injured due to
artillery fire directed at the north of Akkarayankulam and
west of Iranamadu areas during the day, it said.

One soldier also lost his life during the clashes in
Iranamadu Sunday, the Media Centre for National Security
(M.C.N.S.) said Monday.

Two civilians were killed in a claymore attack by
suspected L.T.T.E. militants on a civilian vehicle in
Mahametiyawa on the Padaviya-Kebethigollawa road in the
North-eastern part of the country last night, it said.

Separate clashes left four L.T.T.E. militants dead and
equal number of them injured in Mankulam in Kilinochchi
Sunday, the M.C.N.S. said, adding four Tamil tigers were
gunned down in Vannarikulam in the region Sunday.

At least one L.T.T.E. rebel was killed in Vedamkulam
during confrontation with the security forces Sunday in
Vavuniya, the military said, adding one tiger rebel was killed
in Muhamale in Jaffna peninsula during clash with the troops.

In another incident, an electric transformers and four
supporting posts were damaged in an explosion in Colombo
Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the police found 145 rounds of T-56
ammunition from a location in a paddy field in Kelaniya,
about 10 kms north of Colombo, Sunday afternoon. PTI TVS
