PRESIDENT PRESCRIBES 10 STEPS TO DEAL WITH FINANCIAL CRISIS
Jakarta, Oct 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Monday prescribed 10 steps to avoid the negative impact of the US financial crisis on the country's economy.
"It is our task to make difficult problems easy," he said at a plenary cabinet meeting, which was also attended by business and national mass media leaders.
The president firstly appealed to all parties to continue to remain optimistic and to cooperate with each other to maintain public confidence.
Secondly, he called for continued efforts to find export and investment opportunities and to develop domestic economy to achieve the target of six percent economic growth.
Thirdly, he called for optimization of the 2009 state budget and continued efforts to spur growth while paying attention to social safety net programs in the fields such as infrastructure development, budget allocation for poverty eradication, provision of electricity, food and fuel oil supplies.
President Yudhoyono also emphasized the importance of increasing efficiency in the use of the national as well as regional budgets.
To the business community he appealed to continue promoting the real sector so that it would continue to move.
"If it can be done, tax and state revenues as well as employment will be maintained. Bank Indonesia (central bank) and national banks have to build a national system to make credits able to develop the real sector," he said.
He said the government will do his job by providing incentives and facilities proportionately.
He said all parties had to be more creative in seeking opportunities such as developing markets in neighboring countries in Asia which were not directly affected by the US crisis.
"We must make our products more competitive and have better bargaining power," he said.
President Yudhoyono also called for reviving the campaign to promote domestic products to make domestic markets stronger.
"To all ministers I appeal to give incentives and disincentives for the increased use of domestic products and, if necessary, to issue instructions for the prioritization of domestic products in the procurement of goods and services in their respective departments," he said.
He also called for strengthening cooperation among the government, Bank Indonesia, banking and private sectors.
"Prevent the creation of distrust and remember that all parties have an important role to play," he said.
Do not be selfish
On the occasion President Yudhoyono also called on all parties to discard selfishness and not to underestimate the challenges faced by the nation.
"Wipe out ego-centric attitudes and the habit of seeing everthing in a 'business-as-usual' way," he said.
He said all parties had their own portions with regard to challenges and all had to work together and not to rely on others.
The president said the year 2009 was a political and general elections year. This fact as well the current crisis should be good reason for all parties to avoid partisan politics and put the people's interest above group or individual interests.
Finally, he called on all parties to conduct correct and good communications with the people. He said the role of the press in this case was very important because it had access to information from the people.
All cabinet members attended the meeting that lasted from 2pm to 5.30pm.
