PRESIDENT TO MEET SULTAN HAMENGKUBUWONO ON TUESDAY
Jakarta, Oct 6 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to meet with Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta at the former's office on Tuesday to discuss a number of issues, including the issuance of a presidential decision to extend the Sultan's tenure as the region's governor.
"Indeed there is a schedule for the meeting. Initially it would be held today but because there was an important meeting today, it has been postponed to tomorrow," Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said here on Monday after a plenary cabinet meeting.
Hatta said one of the issues to be discussed at the meeting was the extension of the Sultan's tenure as governor of Yogyakarta province for another three years.
He said President Yudhoyono had invited the Sultan to meet in Jakarta. "I contacted the Sultan. The President indeed invited him. I think it is normal for a president to meet with a governor," he said.
Asked if the presidential decision would indirectly hinder the Sultan's aspirations to run for the presidency in the 2009 election, Hatta firmly denied it.
"It is not like that. Do not think in terms of hindering this or that. We must build trust so the idea of hindering him in any way out of context," he said.
The minister said the bottomline of the presidential decision was the need to avoid a power vacuum while the bill on the province's status as a special region was still being discussed.
"Inputs from many parties including the Sultan, the people or the central government are needed for the discussion of the bill. From a legal point of view the decision will not cause a problem because the law on the province's special status made in 1954 is still in force," he said.
