VP : INDONESIA`S CONDITIONS NOW FAR BETTER THAN BEFORE

Makassar, Indonesia, Oct 6 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said here on Monday the country's conditions under the government led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and himself were now much better than before.

"The country's economic growth rate is now around 6.3 percent while income per capita is above US$2,000 a year. This growth is four times higher than at the begining of the crisis in 1997 when it was recorded at minus 12 percent," he said at a seminar at Hasanuddin University.

Mentioning other achievements, Kalla referred to the administration's decision to make the education sector a top priroity in the state budget. Previously, the top priority in the state budget was public works, followed by agriculture and education in third place.

This showed that the present government was giving great attention to human resources development through education which was a must for the country's progress, he said.

About the agricultural sector, he said Indonesia this year was still importing around five million tons of rice but next year, through hard work to increase productivity, the country was expected to be able to export the staple.

He said the productivity of Indonesian rice fields was still four tons per hectare while in neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam it it was seven tons per hectare.

Therefore, Kalla appealed to all heads of agricultural services in the country to improve their performance in helping farmers increase their productivity.

He also asked universities such as Hasanuddin University to help find a way to overcome a decline in South Sulawesi's cacao production following an insect attack.

Meanwhile, commenting on Kalla's claims, the dean of the economic faculty of the Universiy of Indonesia, Bambang Brojonegoro, said Indonesia had yet to overcome various problems such as poverty and unemployment with an economic growth standing at 6.3 percent.

He said the government should be able to raise the country's economic growth rate to seven percent in order to be able to come out of the problems. He said the target could be met by promoting investment from home and abroad. He said the country's economic growth was far driven only by the consumer sector and commodity exports.

He said in five years' time Indonesia also had to have an energy market like other countries such as India, China, Russia and Brazil that had now revived after having market strength. He said those countries were also hit hard like Indonesia in the 1997 global financial crisis.
