INDONESIA MUST DIVERSIFY EXPORT DESTINATIONS : OBSERVER
Semarang, Indonesia, Oct 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has to diversify its export destinations to countries which still have strong purchasing power and are not seriously affected by the United States financial crisis, an economic observer said.
Economist Nugroho SBM of the Diponegoro University, said on Monday that one of the region which still had strong purchasing power was the Middle East, which had just enjoyed the windfall profits of the crude price hikes.
"Japan and the United States are important markets for Indonesia's exports but a financial crisis can happen in any country so that Indonesia should diversify its export destinations," he said.
He predicted the financial crisis that had hit the United States and was affecting other countries would reduce Indonesia's export volume if Indonesia did not diversify its export destinations soon.
Therefore, he said, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should urge Indonesian trade attaches abroad to be more aggressive in marketing Indonesia's products abroad.
"Trade attaches abroad should play a greater role and be more active," he said.
Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kandin) chairman MS Hidayat previously predicted that Indonesia's exports to the United States in the past three months were estimated to drop by about 20 percent as a result of the financial crisis in that country.
