MOST FOREIGN TOURISTS VISITNG N SULAWESI FROM JAPAN
Manado, Indonesia, Oct 6 (ANTARA) - Most foreign tourists visiting North Sulawesi in August 2008 came from Japan, the province's chief statistician said.
"Last August, the number of Japanese tourists reached 238 or about 12.6 percent of the total of foreign tourists who came here," the head of the North Sulawesi branch of the Central Bureau of Statitics (BPS), Jasa Bangun, told ANTARA here Monday.
The figure was based on data on foreign tourist arrivals at Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport.
In August, about 1,886 foreign tourists visited North Sulawesi, an increase from 1,790 in July.
"However, compared with August 2007 when 2,893 foreign tourists visited North Sulawesi, the number last August was down slightly by about 0.40 percent," Bangun said.
Meanwhile, the head of North Sulawesi's culture and tourism office, Edwin Silangen, said the tourism sector was expected to become a growing contributor to North Sulawesi's foreign exchange income, especially after the holding of some international events in the province in the near future.
"The World Ocean Conference (WOC) on May 11-15, 2009 and the program to promote Manado as a world tourism city in 2010 will boost the number tourists visiting North Sulawesi," Silangen said.
As part of preparations for the WOC , infrastructure and other facilities along the routes from Manado's airport to tourism objects were now being upgraded, he added.
