Gangland links suspected in Tempe death

(AAP) Gangland links are being examined in the death of a man who staggered through a Sydney suburb bleeding from a major head wound before collapsing and dying in the street.

Police rushed to the street in Tempe, in the city's south, just before 9pm (AEDT) on
Sunday after passers-by saw the critically wounded man.
Officers tried to revive the man, who was found lying where he had collapsed in
South Street, which borders parkland.
"When officers arrived, they found the man lying in the middle of the road, with
wounds to his head," NSW Police Force said in a statement.
"They immediately applied CPR in an effort to revive him."
The man, who police said was yet to be formally identified, was pronounced dead at
the scene when ambulance crews arrived.
It is understood he had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The Nine Network reported the police investigation would look into whether the
attack on the man was motorcycle gang-related.
Neighbours reported hearing what sounded like firecrackers earlier in the night.
"I just assumed they were firecrackers for (NRL) grand final night, or maybe kids
messing around," South Street resident Stephen Smith told Fairfax.
The road was closed overnight as a crime scene was established.
Police, including the dog squad and forensic officers, scoured surrounding streets
and neighbouring parkland early Sunday in a bid to trace the man's final movements
and to look for further evidence.
Police have called for anyone with information on the man's death to come forward,
by contacting Newtown Police on 02 9550 8199 or calling Crime Stoppers anonymously
1800 333 000.
The man's death was one of three suspicious fatalities across NSW in just under 24
hours.
About 11am Sunday, police found the body of a 39-year-old man in Lindsay Avenue at
Inverell, in the state's north-west.
Then about 10am Monday, another man was found dead at a Wilkinson Road property, in
Gunnedah, also in north-west NSW.
Police said both cases were being treated as suspicious, and post-mortem
examinations would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
