DECENT WORK AGENDA TO BE IMPLEMENTED BY 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Come 2010, the Malaysian government will ensure the implementation of the national Decent Work Agenda through smart partnerships with its tripartite partners, Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam said Monday.

He said the Decent Work Agenda, themed 'Realising Decent Work', was
visualised through the ministry's Strategic Plan from 2008 to 2010, focusing on
six priority areas.

"Among them, creating job opportunities and ensuring workers rights,
ensuring harmonious industrial relations, and solving industrial disputes with
fairness and justice," he added.

In his message in conjunction with World Day for Decent Work tomorrow, Dr
Subramaniam said Malaysia, like other countries, was confronted with a fast
changing and turbulent global economy, and needed a workforce which was easily
adaptable to the situation.

"To meet this challenge, the ministry has launched the National Blueprint
for Skills Development and Training from 2008 to 2020, themed "Skilled Workforce
- Driving Global Competitiveness in Malaysia".

He said a safe and healthy workplace was also an important element of
decent
work, adding that an effective and scheduled enforcement had been conducted by
the Occupational Safety and Health Department.

Since August, Dr Subramaniam said, 99,801 inspections were conducted in
various work premises to ensure employers provided a safe and healthy working
environment for workers.

"Positive progress has also been made on issues related to labour,
especially on wages, where several commissions of inquiry and wage councils were
formed to facilitate the setting of minimum wages," he added.

These, the minister said, were especially for workers under the ambit of
security guards, clinic assistants, hotel and catering, and general workers in
small holdings.

Currently, the ministry is undertaking steps to look at the wages of
workers in the electronics and textile sectors.

He said social security was another element of decent work where the
government would establish a national rehabilitation centre in Melaka to assist
injured workers to re-enter the labour market.

The minister said skills development for workers in the services sector
had also been a priority for the Government where the National Dual Training
System led to 4,594 apprentices being trained through the ministry's 52 training
institutes.
