PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO TO CHAIR SPECIAL CABINET MEETING
Jakata, Oct 6 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to chair a special cabinet plenary meeting at the State Secretariat office on Monday to discuss the impact of global monetary crisis on Indonesian economy.
The cabinet meeting will be attended by related ministers, Bank Indonesia (central bank) officials, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) officials, banking circles, and economic observers.
Earlier on Sunday, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs/Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati held a coordination meeting with Bank Indonesia (central bank) officials and related ministers to discuss the financial crisis in the United States and its possible impacts on Indonesia.
On the occasion Sri Mulyani called on the people to remain calm because the government would continue to make every effort to overcome the global economic crisis' possible impact on Indonesia.
Meanwhile, central bank governor Boediono said the economic crisis in the United States would certainly affect Indonesia but its impact would not be as big as that in the 1997/98 crisis.
"The situation in 1997/98 was different. The condition of banks at that time was different from now while the epicenter of the present crisis is not here but in the US," Boediono said.
He said "banking indicators such as the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) that had reached 16 percent until August 2008, non-performing loans 3.9 percent and credit growth 36 percent would be used as a means in dealing with the crisis."
Therefore Sri Mulyani appealed to the mass media to be careful in reporting the condition of financial institutions in the Indonesia. "Please do not make a headline out of rumors. Conduct re-checks so that the story to be published really reflects the real condition," she said.
She said news that did not reflect the real situation would incur a large cost which could actually be avoided.
"I have asked the chairman of the Capital Market Supervisory Board and its directors as well as the Indonesian Stock Exchange to be open to news media who are seeking confirmation," she said.
