MTUC WANTS GOVERNMENT TO STIPULATE A RM900 MINIMUM SALARY

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC)
will present a memorandum on Oct 7 to the Human Resources Ministry, highlighting
the numerous threats faced by workers, said MTUC secretary-general G.
Rajasekaran.

"MTUC will ask the minister to make substantial amendments to the
Employment
Act to empower the Labour Department to inquire into complaints of unfair labour
practices," he said in a statement here Sunday.

He said the MTUC would also demand that the government fix a RM900 minimum
monthly salary under the Employment Act as currently there was no provision for
minimum wage in the Act, leaving the workers at the mercy of their
employers.

Rajasekaran said the MTUC sees the government's lax policies on importing
foreign workers as a deliberate strategy to suppress wages of Malaysian workers.

He said the MTUC was also asking the government to abolish the recruitment
of foreign workers through labour suppliers.

Meanwhile, Rajasekaran said more than 2,000 workers would attend the World
Day for Decent Work on Oct 7 to highlight the negative effects of globalisation
on working families.
