Ottoman clock tower, one of favorite places in Tripoli
TRIPOLI (A.A) - February 16, 2012 - The Ottoman clock tower is one of the most visited places in Tripoli, the capital of Libya.
Visiting the clock tower as a historical place in the market place in the Shuhada Square is a special value for the townspeople.
Asfer El Zergun, the Historical Works Officer of Tripoli, told the A.A correspondent, "The clock tower was erected by Namik Pasha (assigned by the Ottoman Sultan) in 1866. And the clock tower was designed to be seen from any point of the city."
Zergun said "Ottoman had built up Tripoli by erecting castles, mosques, universities called madrasah and bathhouses. The clock tower which still can be seen from anywhere of the city is one of the favorite places in Tripoli, even when the city was controlled by Italians. The square which also hosts the clock tower is a very important place for the Tripoli residents."
