PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO TO HOLD PLENARY CABINET MEETING PLUS
Jakarta, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will hold a plenary cabinet plus meeting on Monday to discuss the current financial crisis in the US, coordinating minister for economic affairs/finance minister Sri Mulyani said here on Sunday.
She said the meeting would also be attended by figures from various circles such as the Indonesian chamber of commerce and industry and state-owned companies as well as academicians and analysts.
Sri Mulyani said the meeting would discuss the financial crisis in the US and its possible impacts on Indonesia.
Central bank governor Boediono meanwhile said the US crisis would certainly affect Indonesia but the impact would not be as huge as in the 1997/98 crisis.
"The situation in 1997/98 was different. The condition of banks at that time was different from now while the epicenter of the present crisis is not here but in the US," he said.
He said banking supervision now was better than in 1997/98 and the number of banks now was also better controlled than in 1997/98. Supervision of credit distribution is now also better than in 1997/98," he said.
He said "banking indicators such as the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) that had reached 16 percent until August 2008, non-performing loans 3.9 percent and credit growth 36 percent would be used as a means in dealing with the crisis."
Sri Mulyani appealed to the mass media to be careful in reporting the condition of financial institutions in the Indonesia. "Please do not make a headline out of rumors. Conduct re-checks so that the story to be published really reflects the real condition," she said.
She said news that did not reflect the real situation would incur a large cost which could actually be avoided.
"I have asked the chairman of the Capital Market Supervisory Board and its directors as well as the Indonesian Stock Exchage to be open to news media who are seeking confirmation," she said.
