VEEP BELIEVES IMPACT OF U.S CRISIS ON INDONESIA NOT HUGE

Makassar, Indonesia, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he believed the impact of the financial crisis in the US on Indonesia would not be huge.
"I believe it will not be huge because most of Indonesia's exports to that country is energy which is always needed by the US," he said when asked about the problem at his home here on Sunday.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would hold a plenary cabinet meeting on Monday to discuss the crisis.
Kalla said any economic upheaval in the US would certainly affect many countries in the world especially those exporting goods to the US.
He said as Indonesia's exports to that country included energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) the impact of the crisis on the US would certainly not as big as that on countries such as China and India who are the largest commodity exporters to Uncle Sam.
"All countries would be affected. So the question is to what extent. The impact varies with each affected country. And I believe the impact on Indonesia will not be as strong as that on other countries," he said.
He said however that efforts had to be taken to strengthen the domestic market as it was the market that would save the country's economy.
He reminded that prices of goods in the world would certainly drop and therefore strengthening the domestic market should be the main attention.
