TRADE MINISTER: GOVT TO STRENGTHEN DOMESTIC MARKET SECURITY

Jakarta, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here on Sunday the government would step up efforts to strengthen domestic market security against possible shift of exports to the US following a slump in demand in that country as a result of the current financial crisis.
"Because of the unfavourable external condition we must secure the domestic market and must stimulate domestic demands," she said after a coordination meeting of economic ministers and central bank officials.
She said many countries had applied protectionistic policies to protect their domestic market because of the world's flagging economy.
In view of that she said the government would increase its lobbying with export destination countries to reduce trade barriers and tackle any dumping accusations.
"If goods are flowing in here we must secure trade and also respond in case we are accused of dumping," she said.
She said Indonesia had to secure its domestic market from possible flow of imported goods that came legally or possibly illegally as well as dumping products.
