BUDGET COMMITTEE OBJECTS TO GOVT PLAN TO REVISE 2009 BUDGET ASSUMPTIONS

Jakarta, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives' (DPR)budget committee has asked the government to drop its idea to revise the 2009 budget assumptions that have been agreed by the DPR.
"The government should not easily change what has been agreed upon by the DPR. It should even work harder to meet the economic targets as any target reduction will result in lower public welfare expectations," committee deputy chairman Harry Azhar said to ANTARA here on Sunday.
He said the time needed for reviewing the budget both national and regional would not be enough because the DPR would be on a recess on October 24 while according to Law Number 17 of 2003 the draft budget has to be finished by the end of October.
"Forcing to change it means revamping the agreement and this will disrupt expectations that have already been formed," he said.
Finance minister Sri Mulyani said after a coordination meeting of economic ministers and central bank officials on Sunday that the government would revise assumptions of economic growth in the 2009 budget following the weakening of global economic growth,
"The 6.3 percent economic growth set for the 2009 budget that has been discussed must possibly be studied again to see if it is still relevant with regard to latest developments," she said.
She said from the beginning the government had already stated that the assumption of 6.2 percent economic growth was potential for correction.
"We will communicate again the assumptions of economic growth for the 2009 budget that has been discussed at least in the budget committee with the DPR," she said.
She said the development of global economic condition in the past few weeks was very dramatic and therefore correct step was needed to deal with it.
"The assumptions will possible need to be reviewed and so will assumptions of interest, foreign exchange and inflation rates," she said.
She said "we still have until October 25 to conduct changes before the DPR has a recess."
The DPR's budget committee has agreed to set assumptions of economic growth for the 2009 at 6.3 percent, inflation 6.2 percent, rupiah exchange rate Rp9.150 per one US dollar, three-month key rate 8.0 percent, crude price US$95 per barrel, oil production 960,000 barrels a day, gas lifting 7,526.3 MMSCFD, coal production 250 million tons and gross domestic product Rp5,309.37 trillion.
